Franz Schubert’s song cycle, “Winterreise,” or winter songs, will be presented at Cherry Hill plantation on Sunday, April 29, at 3 p.m. Written for voice and piano, the work was first published in 1828. Baritone Marc Callahan and pianist Qiao Zheng Goh will perform.

Callahan, a Pennsylvania native, received his bachelor’s degree from Oberlin College and his master’s and doctor’s degrees from the Cincinnati College Conservatory of Music. As a Rotary Scholar, he was able to pursue his studies in France. Callahan’s performance career has taken him around the world, singing at prestigious opera houses both in the United States and abroad. Opera Magazine has reviewed him as “a powerful baritone, providing a wickedly glamorous tone.” Callahan currently serves on the faculty at UNC-Chapel Hill as assistant professor of voice.

Malaysian-born pianist Qiao is a vocal coach at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and music director/opera repetiteur for UNC Opera. She has been commissioned to perform for the governor of North Carolina, university presidents and patrons, and the North Carolina Arts Council. Prior to locating in North Carolina, Qiao was the staff accompanist at Regis University, adjunct lecturer and principal accompanist at Arapahoe Community College, and ballet repetiteur at Arvada Center of Arts and Humanities in Denver, Colo.

Qiao started her piano studies at the age of 5. She won first prize in the Technics Digital Piano Competition when she was 12. Later, she went on to win second prize in the Malaysian Youth Orchestra Foundation Piano Competition in 2008 and win the University of South Dakota Concerto Competition in 2013 while she was pursuing her master’s degree in Collaborative Piano.

Qiao continues to further her professional development by playing for master classes with world-renowned musicians as well as attending the International Performing Arts Institute in Germany.

A reception will follow Sunday’s performance. Guests will be able to meet the artists and also tour the historic home, located in Inez in southern Warren County. Admission at the door is $10 for adults and $5 for students, with free admission for children age 12 and under.
