Members of the Warren County High School Class of 2019 will receive their diplomas during graduation exercises on Saturday, May 25, at 9:30 a.m.
Student speakers will include student body president Nicky Heisler and class president Montellus Williams.
Delivering the commencement address will be Dr. Michael A. Elam, the fifth president of Halifax Community College in Weldon.
Elam, with more than 30 years of experience in higher education, earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Zoology and Master of Education degree in Student Personnel Administration from Howard University. He received an Educational Doctorate in Higher Educational Leadership from Nova Southeastern University.
Elam has held a number of leadership positions at the community college and university level at Daytona State College, Florida State College at Jacksonville, the University of Houston, Eastern Kentucky University and Illinois State University.
He has served as president of College of the Mainland in Texas City, Texas, and as interim chancellor for Sowela Technical Community College in Lake Charles, La., and Central Louisiana Technical Community College in Alexandria, La.
Elam served as vice president for Strategic Initiatives for the Louisiana Community & Technical College System, and, before arriving at Halifax Community College, served as president at Roanoke-Chowan Community College in Ahoskie.
He and his wife, Maxine, reside in Roanoke Rapids. They have two adult children and four grandchildren.
