The filing period for the May Primary Election opened Monday, and several local candidates have already made their intentions known.

As of Tuesday afternoon, the following incumbents had filed: Johnny M. Williams for sheriff; Lisa F. Blalock for clerk of superior court; Tare (T) Davis for county commissioner, District 2; Bertadean Williams Baker, county commissioner, District 4; Henry L. Durham, Jr., board of education, District 1; Lynne Lassiter, board of education, District 2; and Calvin Curtis Jones, board of education, District 4. A challenger, Robert Moore, is also running for school board in District 4.

Other local seats that will appear on the May ballot are county commissioner, District 3, currently held by Victor Hunt; and board of education, District 2, currently held by Lynne Lassiter.

The filing period will close at noon on Wednesday, Feb. 28.
