Stephanie Seward, a seasoned educator in her 12th year teaching at Mariam Boyd Elementary School, and her first-grade class have been learning all about a Thanksgiving favorite, the turkey.

Students have been working with student-teacher Amber Kammuoa, from Elizabeth City State University, learning facts about turkeys, comparing real and fictional turkeys, and writing about turkeys.

The class spent time last week with Newspaper In Education Literacy Program Coordinator Janie Miller, of The Warren Record, sharing their knowledge of cooking the traditional Thanksgiving bird.

Using sales inserts from local grocery stores Just Save, Piggly Wiggly and Food Lion, students planned a menu for their Thanksgiving feasts and, working together in groups, detailed the steps for cooking the perfect turkey.
