Bertha Mae Powell, 90, departed this life on Thursday, May 9. Funeral services were conducted at 1 p.m. Friday, May 17, at Cooks Chapel Missionary Baptist Church by the Rev. Tony W. Cozart, pastor, officiant, and the Rev. Mark Jones, eulogist, Burial followed in the church cemetery.

Mrs. Powell was born Dec. 13, 1928, to the late John Edward Jones and Mollie Williams Jones. She was the last of eight siblings, Catherine, Cora, Pannie, Betty, Herbert, Johnny and Myrtle.

She was united in holy matrimony to James Earl Powell on Oct. 6, 1945, and this union was blessed with 10 children. Her husband preceded her in death.

Mrs. Powell retired from Textile Sample Company in 1993.

On Dec. 13, 2018, the Powell family celebrated her 90th birthday at Member’s Only Club in Elgin, S.C.

Mrs. Powell leaves to cherish her memories: eight children, Mary Jacqueline, Vergenia, Roosevelt, Thomas, Margaret, Jasmine, Dennis and Shirley; 27 grandchildren; 38 great-grandchildren and 22 great-great-grandchildren; two daughters-in-law, Denise Powell and Rena Powell; one son in-law, Freddie Perera; along with a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives and friends.

Out of the Powell family, there were 13 siblings, and there are only 3 remaining: Virginia Faulkner, Bertha Williams and Rebecca Williams.
